The internet and social media are flooded with Do-it-yourself tips. Many of them work great for us but it's important to know what's good and bad for our skin before we put it in use for experimentation on our skin, especially the facial skin which is more sensitive and thin.

My Beauty Whims brings to you 8 kitchen ingredients you should never put on your face. Read this before you try out your next home remedy -

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is very alkaline in nature and is too harsh for the skin and the PH level for the skin is too damaging. Baking soda disrupts our skin's acid mantle and breaks down the defence against bacteria. Never use Baking Soda directly on your skin even by mistake!

2. Lemon Juice

Lemon Juice is no doubt a popular DIY ingredient but not knowing the exact amount while using it in your regimen can be very harmful to your skin. Lemon not only makes your skin sensitive to heat and sun but also very dry in the long run. It breaks down the skin's natural barrier and can result in intense burning or rashes with UV exposure

3. Toothpaste

"Apply toothpaste on your zit and pimple to cure them overnight". Relatable much? If you've been through acne, you must have tried this at least once in your life. We did this too! And that's how we know it burns out the zit to leave it dried up. Triclosan and Flouride in the toothpaste can mess up with your hormones if used frequently. No kidding!

4. Ice-cube

They say cold compress of an ice-cube is great to rejuvenate the skin. Well, that true! But the correct way to use the cold compress is to put the ice-cube in a clean cloth and use it on your face/ acne to get the best benefits. Applying ice directly on your skin will shrink the blood vessels making the blood circulation slower which is definitely not great for your skin.

5. Mayonnaise

You must have seen a number of beauty bloggers adding Mayonnaise to their hair and face masks. Well, this ingredient might work well to nourish your dry hair but it will surely clog your pores making you prone to breakouts and acne if used on the face. So, turn it down!

6. Hair Spray

People say that hairspray keeps your makeup in the place like it does to your hair! But, hairspray is meant for just one thing - your hair! Hairspray contains alcohol which dehydrates your skin and may also irritate your skin, causing inflammation and redness.

7. Vinegar

Have you ever tried a DIY toner where you mix equal parts of Vinegar and water? If not, good! Vinegar is very acidic in nature. Even when diluted it's dangerous for your skin and can cause irritation. It's better to invest in a toner that suits your skin than using this mix.

8. Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum Jelly works amazingly to seal the moisture in your dry and fragile lips. But, apart from moisture it also seals the dirt and debris on the skin. This can cause more dryness over time because it prevents your skin from breathing. While we've seen many actresses recommending an application of vaseline on cheeks for that additional glow, you must stay away from it!
